Badgerpaw saw Spottedstar's paw coming, but wasn't able to get out of the way before she was batted with one of her powerful paws. She ducked and managed to stay out of the way of the otehr blows, though she did have a little trouble. She leaped after her mentor as she darted away, aiming a bat or two at her side. She smiled as she found that she was fairly good at fighting, she had always watched the other apprentices fight and had always thought that she would be an awful fighter, but Spottedstar made it seem alright.

Spottedstar felt Badgerpaw's front paw touch her hind leg as she jumped out of the way. It's good that she reacts quickly, she thought to herself. The leader whirled back around with the speed of lightening and aimed a blow at her apprentice's paws, hoping to throw her off balance. Spottedstar then leaped at her apprentice again. Her paws were outstretched and her energy high.

Badgerpaw started to jump off of the ground, almost but not quite avoiding Spottedstar's swipe at her paws. She felt herself starting to fall and she didn't want to fall. She struggled to get her paws underneath her but fell on her side instead. The air was driven out of her lungs and she felt a little dizzy for a moment as she gasped and to try and get her breath back. She blinked and shook her head confusedly, she hadn't had that happen before.

Spottedstar took her chance, pouncing straight onto Badgerpaw as she fell. "I win", meowed the leader, her hazel eyes glittering mischievously. "But that was well fought, Badgerpaw." She stepped aside to let her apprentice get up. "You're shaping up really well. I'll just teach you a couple of moves now that you might find helpful in battle."
Spottedstar padded a few tail-lengths away, crouching down slightly. "Try to jump on my back", she meowed. "If you're fighting a much bigger cat, getting on top of them will get you out of the way of their claws. You can then inflict any wounds you want, without them able to get to you. I promise that I won't move", she added.
[These moves are real. There's some listed in an extract from Secrets of the Clans and the official warriors site =D ]

[{cool! I'll hafta check it out!}]
Badgerpaw smiled and got to her paws, only to stop uncertainly as she heard her mentor tell her what to do next. It seemed, well, strange to pounce on her mentor's back. She frowned, not exactly wanting to do as she had been told, but also not wanting to be disobediant. 'Okay...' He meowed before trying to jump on her back gracefully, but ending up slipping and having to scramble up as though she were climbing a rock pile. When she finally made it up she simple slipped off of the other side, finding it hard to stay on with sheathed claws.

"That's good; you'll manage it perfectly without sheathed claws." Spottedstar gave herself a quick stretch to get the slight ache out of her muscles. "There's also a move which is useful for all warriors. It's called the belly rake. Basically, when someone has you pinned down, you run your claws along their belly. It'll make them let go, so that you can get up and keep fighting. Another thing that can serve the same purpose is to 'play dead', which speaks for itself." The leader padded over to her apprentice and sat down. "I'll give you the choice of what you want to do next. Do you want to practice these moves I just mentioned, learn some more or go out hunting?"

Badgerpaw flicked an ear. Though she had liked the fighting she saw no use in it if she didn't know how to hunt for herself, anyways, she had always preferred hunting and that would probably never change. 'How about some hunting?' She meowed. Fighting had always made her feel strange, and though Spottedstar had done a good job making it fun, she still didn't like it as much as other things.

"Right; that sounds good." The leader rose to her paws and began to walk out into the moor again, flicking her tail to tell her apprentice to follow her. She lifted her head to taste the air, but the scent of prey wasn't as strong as usual. "We've probably scared the little critters off a bit", she said with a smile. "We'll have to go a bit further to find some prey. You can lead", she added to Badgerpaw.

Badgerpaw glanced around and nodded as her mentor commented that they must have scared the prey away. It made sense, Badgerpaw would have most likely ran if she had been a mouse and heard all the noise. She set off, small paws trotted gracefully over the ground as her mouth opened slightly to catch any prey scents nearby. She kept trotted, actually feeling rather proud to have a mentor and to be training to be a warrior, and that her mentor was the leader. She grinned, something that she rarely permitted herself to do since she lost her brother, things were going well for her at last.

Spottedstar walked swiftly behind Badgerpaw, keeping up the pace. She too was enjoying herself, more than usual, in fact. She felt as if nothing could dampen her spirits at that moment. She paused briefly; opening her jaws to check of there were any prey scents yet. There weren't; but they were defiantly getting closer. She began to move slightly faster.

Badgerpaw quickened her pace as Spottedstar did, though her small paws stayed just as silent as always. She skidded to a stop as a prey scent hit the roof of her mouth. ‘I think I smell something.’ She whispered to her mentor, yellow green eyes flashing excitedly. Hunting was something she really enjoyed, it was probably her favorite thing to do. She liked it better than sitting and watching the other loud apprentices play, better than playing, better than anything.

The leader stopped too, parting her jaws to check for the scent of prey. "Well done Badgerpaw", she murmured. "that smells just like a rabbit. They're all over this moor, as you probably know by now." Spottedstar tasted the air again, this time confirming that the rabbit was downwind. "Okay then", she meowed to her apprentice, "Let's see how you go about catching it."

Badgerpaw nodded and crouched. She began stalking forward, and though she was pretty good at it she was still awkward about it. As she approached the long eared thing her paw just barely missed a twig. Her body brushed the ground and the rabbit looked up. Before it could move Badgerpaw leaped out of her cover and raced towards it with a yowl. The rabbit froze for a moment, in the strange way that animals do when they are extremely surprised or frightened about something and by the time it made its mind up to run Badgerpaw was close enough to catch it. She made a leap for it and nearly missed, just barely catching it by a hind leg and then pulling it down to bite its neck. Badgerpaw panted from the exertion and looked to Spottedstar for approval.

Spottedstar nodded at her apprentice in approval . "Not the best of catches", she meowed, "But you caught it; that's the main thing. Good job on racing after it even though it had noticed you. A warrior who gives up easily isn't going to get very far in life."

Badgerpaw raised her head happily at her mentor’s praise. ‘Thanks Spottedstar, the other apprentices say that I’m too slow to act though, they say I think too much. They said that if I was fighting an enemy he would have killed me while I was thinking about what I wanted to do.’ She slouched a little at the rememberance. ‘Do you think I’ll be able to be a good warrior?’
