Mistpaw stared at her, wondering why she looked so amused, had he done something funny? Said something funny? He shrugged as she started to show him how to hunt a mouse. He put his head to the side and then tried it. He crouched down, keeping his tail low this time. He tried to draw his paws up slowly like her, but he almost fell over on his first try. He shook his head and tried again, being a bit more succesful this time. He smiled to himself as he tried harder and then looked at Autumnstar for instruction.

"You're going lop-sided again," she said and pushed his left side down with her paws. "If you're balanced, you should be able to walk, try it slowly first," she said. She crouched next to him and slowly pulled her paws forward until she was at the base of a large oak tree. She smiled and touched the floor hard. A brown creature scurried out and shot by Mistpaw. "Catch the scent," she instructed.

Mistpaw tried to walk as Autumnstar did, growling on the inside about his lopsidedness. As the brown creature scurried by he jumped back, startled. He glanced at Autumnstar curiously as he sniffed the air to catch the scent. He put his head to the side. 'What was it?' he meowed, wondering if he should have caught it or if it was okay that he hadn't. His tail twitched a little, he hadn't recognized the smell very much at all but was eager to learn what it had been.

"Water vole," she said, but sounded quite worried. Water voles weren't usually found in the forest but by the banks of the river. She twitched her tail as she thought silently. Her gaze found Mistpaw's for a moment before she carried on with her lesson. "Normal voles smell almost the same though," she said with a half-smile. "Now, I would like you to catch me a vole or a mouse. You know what a mouse smells and tastes like and younow know what a vole looks and smells like. Do me proud, Mistpaw," she said and padded away. She hadn't gone far. Just a few paw-steps and then up the oak tree. She didn't want him to see her. She wanted to watch him.

Mistpaw put his head to the side as he watched Autumnstar pad away and then he twitched an ear in uncertainty for a moment. His gaze flicked around the small clearing for a moment before looking towards where he had seen the water vole went. He got to his paws and followed it's trail, tasting the air carefully as he made his way towards where he thought it was. Crouching down as he got nearer to it he flicked his tail excitedly as his gray eyes caught it's movement. He did his best to not be lopsided as he continued closer to it in the crouch that he had just learned. He had stalked other kits in the nursery before but that had all been play, this was real and he could feel it. His ears were forward, intent on his prey. He brought his paw forward again, quite silently but as he put is down he stepped on a twig, which broke with a snap. The water vole lost no time in scurrying away but Mistpaw lost no time either. As soon as he heard the snap he knew that his cover was blown and he leaped out of his crouch. He landed a furs length away from it but he shot his head forward, just barely catching it. He let out a sigh as he looked at his prey, thankful that it hadn't been any faster or he certainly wouldn't have caught it.

Autumnstar followed him in the cover of the trees. Once he had finished and caught his vole she silently dropped from her tree and landed on his back. He paws dug into his shoulders, she didn't want to hurt him but see what he did in warrior fighting. Her claws remained sheathed as she did so but the strength in her paws was incrediable. She flicked her tail, wondering what he'd do.

Mistpaw's body tensed as he felt another presence nearby and when he felt something on his back he let out something between a growl, a hiss, and a startled meow. He pushed himself to the side and over on his back, hoping to knock the whatever it was off in the process. He continued to growl and spit as he reached behind him with a paw full of unsheathed claws and clawed desperated for anything.

"Panicking is not good," she said and dodged his claws before leaping off him. "You did very well though," she said and smiled. "If you hadn't of stepped on that twig, you would have caught it brilliantly," she said and grinned. She twitched her tail, waiting for his reaction. She knew she was slightly unfair to him, she should have congratulated him, not attacked him, but he had to learn somehow. An intruder wouldn't talk to you, then attack, but attack silently.

Mistpaw sighed as he relized that it had only been Autumnstar. 'You scared me.' he said, licking his ruffled pelt and trying to hide his embarassment. He twitched his tail happily though at her praise and looked up. 'I guess I shoulda been watching where I was stepping too huh?' he smiled and stretched his front leg carefully before returning his attention to Autumnstar, waiting for what she would say or do next.

She looked at Mistpaw and smiled, she twitched her ebony based pelt and grinned. "You've worked hard today," she said. "And as a reward, you may eat your vole right now. Afterwards, I want you to hunt a little more and practise your stealth. You're probably tired already but if you feel that i'm pushing you too hard, just come back," she said seriously. She watched him with her wide amber eyes. "Plus, if you wish to come to the Gathering, you may," she said with a smile before slipping into the ferns.

Mistpaw stared after her happily, the Gathering!! He grinned and then turned to his vole to devour it hungrily. After he swallowed his last bite he tasted the air and slipped away into the bushes, searching for something to catch. He startled a mouse from its hiding place but was too slow to catch it. He growled to himself and watched where he stepped better. He noticed something move under a nearby bush and he instantly crouched and prowled towards it, determined to catch whatever it was. He tasted the air again and this time caught its scent, mouse! He stalked towards it, trying to do his best to keep from being lopsided. He smiled as he got close enough to pounce without being seen. He tensed and then threw himself at the mouse, landing neatly next to it and scooping it up, quickly dispatching it with a sharp bite. He grinned and then looked around for something else to catch. He heard a scratching noise close and he lowered himself near the ground as he crept closer to see what it was. As he neared it he saw something brown with a short tail moving around in the undergrowth. He hadn't the slightest idea what it was but he decided it would probably be good anyway. He quickly caught it and put it in the same pile he had put the mouse in. He looked admiringly at his small pile of fresh kill that he had caught himself and smiled, he was learning and soon he would be a great warrior.

Autumnstar smiled with delight. She was again, hiding in the autumn bound tree, so her pelt camoflagued her greatly. She had watched Mistpaw with great happiness, he was becoming great at stalkling. She grinned again, waiting him catch a rabbit.

Mistpaw glanced around, eyes half lidded as he tasted the wind, trying to catch the scent of anything else that was around but couldn't. He shook his pelt and looked at his kill pile, wondering if he should go ahead and head back to camp, he was feeling tired and he paws were feeling a little sore. With a decisive nod he picked up his prey and started back to camp, his tail high in pleasure despite his weariness.

She stealthily dropped to the ground, making no impact or sound on the floor. She twitched her tail and watched Mistpaw go with a sense of pride. She griined and began to hunt for the Clan herself. Her gaze cast around and caught the sight of pigeon dirt, quite fresh. She walked in that direction and found the wood pigeon snoozing on a lower brank. "Thank you, StarClan," she muttered and quickly snapped the bird's neck. To add to her pigeon was a temptingly fat rabbit, a scrawny vole and a mouse. Overall, she was pleased with her fresh-kill and walked back to camp, her jaws laden with prey.
