Lillykit's fluffy white pelt brushed against the twigs that surrounded the entrance of the medicine cat's den. Yet again, the kit was hoping to help Snowshoe to organize her herbs, something that she'd enjoyed doing for moons. Her amber eyes searched to content of the den, seeking the sight of the medicine cat's snowy pelt, hoping that she was at home.

Snowshoe had just arrived back at the den. In her mouth she carried a big bundle of fresh herbs. She walked over to the rock in from of the den's opening. After a careful look at the rock to be sure it was clean enough, she set them down and started to sort them. While she did this she thought worriedly of her dream.

"Hello Snowshoe!", Lillykit's exited voice echoed through the den. The white kit trotted over to the medicine cat's side. "Anything I can help you with?", she asked, gleefully eying the pile of freshly-picked herbs. There was nothing she enjoyed more then spending the afternoon sorting through supplies, the heavenly scent drifting around her like music to her ears.

Snowshoe smiled at the kit. 'Sure. I would enjoy some help.' she moved over to make room for her at the rock and then nosed the herbs. 'If you could help me sort these that would be very helpful.'

Lilykit smiled. "Sure", she replied, sitting down next to Snowshoe. She enjoyed this work so much. She wanted to do it for the rest of life. The kit desperately wanted to become Snowshoe's apprentice but she couldn't think of the right words to ask.

Snowshoe looked at the kit quietly. So like me when I was younger. she thought quietly to herself. She started talking, telling her about the different herbs. 'This is chamomile, it helps calm down stressed cats. This is goldenrod, it helps keep away infection. And these are dock leaves, they can help things get slippery that are stuck.' she went on and on.

Lillykit laughed, not really minding Snowshoe's lecture. "Snowshoe", she meowed, before closing her mouth again. Then the kit stared at her paws, embarrassed at her sudden outburst, but she knew that Snowshoe was likely to question her about what she'd been about to say. Forcing her mouth back open, she asked, "Have you ever wanted an apprentice?"

Snowshoe blinked. 'Well, I've many times hoped I would be sent one.' she answered, looking at Lillykit with a smile. 'Why?' She thought she knew the answer but she wanted to hear it from her own mouth.

"Well, I.." Lillykit shuffled her paws and she stared at them, wishing that Snowshoe wouldn't look at her so intently. "I could be your apprentice..." she meowed, her voice trailing off. She hated being centre of attention. Finally looking up, the kit added, "I really like sorting herbs and stuff."

Snowshoe smiled and nodded. 'I thought that question would come someday.' She licked her forehead. 'You remind me of myself when I was younger, I was always fascinated with herbs.' She smiled, her thoughts wandering back to the good times in her past but as the progressed into more painful memories she blinked and shook her head, as if to chase them away. She looked back down at Lillykit to divert her mind.

Lillykit smiled and nodded, finally feeling comfortable again. Her paws reached out and dragged a section of the herbs closer to her. The white kit carefully divided out the poppy seeds in the group. Then she stood up and placed them in their proper section. "Do I have to wait till I'm six moons old to become your apprentice?", Lillykit asked Snowshoe.

Snowshoe hesitated, she knew that Lillykit was already nearly 6 moons, but the rules were the rules. 'I'll ask Spottedstar about it.' she finally said with a smile.

"Ok", meowed Lillykit. "I don't mind waiting, I just thought that perhaps it would be different for medicine cats. It doesn't really make much difference anyway, I'll still be in your den half the time." She smiled; nothing would keep her away from this part of the camp.

Snowshoe nodded. 'That's true.' she set some herbs in a different pile of their own and turned back to the pile of herbs in front of her and Lillykit. It'll be nice to have an apprentice, someone to help out around here. She hadn't realized how relieved she would be with the knowledge of a medicine cat to take over when she was gone.

"So... will Spottedstar announce my apprenticeship in front of the whole clan?" Lillykit shrank back at the thought. She wanted to stay in the background, not the center of someone's attention; let alone the whole clan's. I suppose I'll have to get used to it, she thought, still not looking forward to it.
