A rabbit ventured out of its den, sniffing the air as it stood up on its hind paws. Deciding that the coast was clear, it began to the nibble on the grass beneath it. But it wasn't alone. Downwind, behind its back, a Bengal she-cat creped toward her target. Her stayed locked on her catch, slowly proceeding closer and closer. One barely a tail-length away, the she-cat pounced, her unsheathed claws aimed straight for the soft, white fur of the rabbit. Light grey fur, dappled with leopard-like markings whizzed through the air, landing right on top of the unsuspecting creature.
Before the rabbit had a chance to move a muscle, the cat was on top of it. She killed it expertly, quickly burying her prey to return for later. The leader decided to take a break; she'd caught three rabbits and mouse already. Sitting on the grave, she licked a fore paw and began to wash her face.
As she rested, Spottedstar thought about how stupid she was. She'd ordered for no cat the leave camp alone, and here she was too far away for anyone to hear her cry. She pushed that out of her mind, knowing the real reason why she'd come to this secluded spot. She wanted to be alone, away from the responsibilities of a leader. But, the she-cat reflected, that was something she'd never escape. That wasn't the truth either. There was no point in lieing to herself.
Spottedstar had always been close to her sister. They'd trained together, lost their mother together, become warriors together; stayed together. The only thing they hadn't done was die together. Spottedstar remembered that fateful day, when green cough finally overcame Windclan's young deputy, Smokeheart. In her last words, she'd named her sister as her successor.
Spottedstar looked up to the clear, blue sky. The spirits of Silverpelt were not visible to her eyes, but the Windclan leader knew that Smokeheart was watching her. She always would be.
Maybe I'll get a sign now, thought Spottedstar. She was alone for the first time in what seemed like moons. She'd lost so many cats this past moon... first Echopaw had been forced to seek help from Shadowclan. Then Frostfur had been slaughtered by a heartless loner. Finally, Frostfur's son, Rainwhisker and Waterheart had disappeared without a trace. Spottedstar sighed. She had to have faith...
