Icepaw wandered into a flat, grassy clearing. He looked up at the sky, wondering if his parents were still alive, living at that two-leg nest. He shook hid head.
Of course they weren't alive! They both died after he was born!
He sighed. Who was he kidding? His parents were living the soft life of a kitty pet. His mother had left him in the forest and went back to the life that he had hated. Did she really like being a kitty pet enough to abandon him when he was only a kit? Icepaw sighed again, casting his blue eyes up at the sky.
Icepaw's eyes suddenly turned cold. What should he care about a mother that wouldn't even stay with her only kit? Why should he be sad if she died, if she was too lazy to catch her own food, too selfish to risk her life saving her clan, if she only wanted things to be handed to her and she didn't want to feel the pride that came with feeding and fighting for her clan? Icepaw angrily dug his claws in the ground.

Blackstar could smell a young tom ahead. The scent was familiar, of Riverclan definately. As he approached the cat, he recognised the pelt of Icepaw, one of their apprentices. Blackstar heard a sigh, and then a slight scraping noise of claws in hard ground. He padded up to the apprentice and sat down beside him, determined not to startle every cat he walked up to. "Is there something troubling you, young Icepaw?" he asked in an inquisitive voice, his green eyes turned towards the apprentice in curiosity. He wouldn't press for answers, since many cats seemed to keep their worries to themselves, but he would listen if any answer was given. It seemed to him that his clan was a very troubled clan, many cats worried or upset about their origins, and he wished that he could simpathize with them, though being clan born made everything easier for him. I don't have to struggle to be accepted, but only because I was born here. he thought.

"No... just thinking." Icepaw looked up at Blackstar. "You know, I've been trying to make myself believe that I was clan born and that my parents had died for two moons now. I couldn't accept the fact that my mother had just left me in the forest and went back to the soft life of a kitty-pet to be with my father." He gave a small nervous laugh.
Icepaw reverted back to the happy young apprentice that he was, not wanting to really talk about it anymore. "Oh well, can't dwell on the past, right? It would just distract me from my training!"

Blackstar blinked as Icepaw related his story. "Sometimes I wish I hadn't been clan born, so that I could understand what it is many of my clanmates are going through better...." he sighed, his green eyes intense with meaning. "But, you're right. We should move forwards, not backwards, and be happy for what we are given, like the company of our clanmates, and our lovely prey filled territory." He purred in amusement as the apprentice seemed to bounce back from his worries.

"That's the spirit!" Icepaw laughed. "And besides, if we could completely understand what each of our clan mates went through, they wouldn't seem as interesting and we wouldn't have a reason to want to learn more about them." He stood for a moment, confused by his own sentence. "OK, am I just ranting on now, of does that make sense?" Icepaw laughed at his own stupidity.

Blackstar liked that Icepaw had returned to his usual attitude. He laughed and replied,"No, that makes sense. Its more interesting to talk to someone you can't relate to. You can grow from their experiences as well as your own." Blackstar's eyes were shining and he stood up.
OOC//: Icepaw needs a mentor, doesn't he?

(Yeah)
"Yeah, like since you're clan born, I can't help but wonder if it would make me stronger since I wouldn't have all these things weighing me down, but I also wonder if it's these things holding me back that makes me stronger and makes me what I am today. If we had different pasts, we might be a completely different cat, not who we are right here." Icepaw kneaded the ground again with thoughts of his past and his mother, his father, and the two-legs

Blackstar nodded thoughtfully. He saw Icepaw fidgeting as he seemed to be thinking about other things again. "Just keep being you, and you'll grow to be one of the best warriors in the clan some day." he advised, "I think you help break the tension in the clan sometimes, the way you can look so care free." Even when you aren't as carefree as you seem, the rest of the clan is happier by your example. he thought, Even one smiling face can lift the cloud that sometimes hovers over our camp... He flicked his white tipped tail from side to side over the ground.

Icepaw smiled up at Blackstar. "You really think I"ll turn out to be a good warrior? I want to be a warrior so maybe if my mother wasn't proud of me as a kit, if she finds out I'm a warrior maybe she'll finally be proud of me. I'm just glad I can help make even a small difference in the clan, even if it mean just helping to break some tension."

Blackstar smiled, "I'm sure you'll do much more than that. I really do think you'll make a good warrior, and both I and your mentor will be proud of you on that day, and every day up until then and after as well." he said. His green eyes glinted as a ray of sunlight passed over them, the movement of a fern causing the ray to dance. The movement was, however, no cause for alarm, as it had been caused by a slight breeze.

Icepaw smiled again. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw some brush moving, but it wasn't just a breeze, like Blackstar had seen a moment ago. He immediately knew it was a water vole. Following his instincts, he dropped down on his haunches. He saw the little creature emerge from underneath the undergrowth, only two and a half tail-lengths from where he was. The vole was creeping along at a steady pace, and hadn't taken notice of Icepaw. He waited for it to get a little closer, instead of taking the risk of scaring the vole if he crept up on it. Still just following his instincts, he leaped through the air, landing on top of the vole. He quickly killed it with a bite to the neck.
Icepaw looked at the vole he just caught, up to Blackstar, then back to the dead vole. "Wow... Did I really just catch a vole? I haven't even started learning how to hunt yet! I was just following my instincts..." Icepaw trailed off and let out a nervous laugh. He looked back up at Blackstar.

Blackstar noticed the vole after icepaw. It hadn't noticed either of them as it crawled out of the safety of the undergrowth and started across the ground. Blackstar watched as icepaw seemed to get ready to attack it, wondering if he was trying to hunt, or playing. He watched the apprentice creep up to the prey and kill it quickly, then watched as icepaw seemed to be amazed at his catch. "very well done." he meowed to the apprentice. He'll be a good hunter as well. Blackstar thought. From a leaders position, that was a good thing for his clan.

Icepaw smiled. "Well, I guess it isn't something to complain about, huh? It's weird though... I don't remember anything, I know I saw it move some undergrowth, and the next thing I knew, I was standing here with a vole in front of me." Icepaw tried to recall hunting the vole, but now it just seemed blank, as if he hadn't hunted it at all. He twitched the tip of his tail side to side in confusion.
Thoughts of his mother often catching birds and mice in the back yard of the two-leg's house flooded his mind. He had often watched her, studying her every movement. Icepaw snapped back to reality, wondering if watching his mother as a kit had taught him how to hunt. But that was when he was a kit, he hardly remembered it! When he replayed the scene in his head, it was all blurry, and his mother just looked like a gray smear. He twitched his tail in annoyance of not knowing.

Blackstar nodded. "well your mentor will have an easier time of teaching you to hunt." he meowed. He saw Icepaw's tail flick in annoyance after a few minutes of silence, and he wondered what would be annoying about having caught his first piece of prey. He crouched, tired of standing in once place. The sun was creeping ever lower on the horizon as he watched Icepaw, and the shadows were growing longer.

Icepaw yawned. He looked up at the sky and saw that the sun was setting. "I'm getting kind of tired, I'm going to go back to the camp." He picked up his vole and disappeared through the undergrowth heading in the direction of the Riverclan camp.
