Sootfur looked up, only to see trees covering the sky. He sighed. The sky. He loved seeing the sky, but the was no place in Shadowclan he could see it. The trees always grew thick, no matter where the were placed. He wondered if he truly belonged in Shadowclan, with his love of the sky...

Small black paws leaped easily over a broken old log. A black-and-white she-cat bounded into view, her tail waving in a friendly greeting. "Hi Sootfur", she meowed, padding over to her clan-mate. Her unusual blue eyes glittered and sparkled, reflecting her surroundings. It was these eyes that gave the Shadowclan warrior her name; Moongaze.

"Hey" Sootfur greeted her in his usual quiet and gravely voice. He stood up, only reveling how large he was. He couldn't help but look up at the trees, wishing he could see the sky, a moment longer, before turning back to her.

The black & white warrior followed Sootfur's gaze. "Watching something?", she asked, scanning the treetops for anything unusual. Then her eyes pricked. "Waiting here a second", she told Sootfur. Moongaze quickly stood up and tasted the air. Defiantly a vole. She padded slowly and carefully towards the prey. The scent grew stronger; she crouched down and crept towards it. The bushes parted the reveal the vole. Moongaze waited a heart-beat before pouncing on the small creature.
The she-cat trotted back over to Sootfur with the limp prey in her jaws. She sat down again, scraping dirt over the catch. When Moongaze looked up at the other warrior again, she'd completely forgotten what she'd previously said to him.

Sootfur just watched her. He didn't want to say anythng; he didn't like talking too much. It's not that he hated talking, he just never felt too much of a need to. He always perferred non-verbal speaking instead of verbal. He looked up for a moment and sighed. "Do you ever wish you could see the sky?"
He didn't mean to let it slip out; he didn't want anyone to know about how he loved the sky. He was afraid someone might claim him a tratior or unloyal to his clan.

Moongaze's eyes stared up at the thick canopy of tree branches. "No, not in particular", she replied. "I prefer to see dense vegetation above my head, protecting me. It makes me fell safer, as if nothing can spy on me. Nothing can fall on me from up above. Of course leaves wouldn't catch anything heavy, but it's more the feeling of being safe." She paused, thinking about what she'd said for a moment. "In the end it doesn't really matter to me", the warrior meowed. "This is Shadowclan's territory; I'll feel safe in it no matter what happens inside it."

"Oh..." Sootfur sighed and stalked off, his pelt making it look like he disappeared into the darkness. He couldn't help but think about what Moongaze said, but he still felt the same way. He wanted to see the sky, to see the clouds, the rain, the sun. He wanted to see his ancestors looking down on him from Silverpelt.

"Sootfur! Where are you going?" Moongaze scrambled to her paws and darted after the Shadowclan warrior. What did I say? she thought to herself. "Sootfur", she panted as she caught up with the tom. "What's wrong?" The she-cat's eyes looked concerned and slightly worried, and the end of her tail twitched nervously.

"It's nothing.... Just thinking about..... some things..." Sootfur hoped she didn't ask any more questions, he never did like talking. "I think I'll go hunting..." he thought out loud.

"Do you want to hunt together?" Moongaze offered. She didn't know whether Sootfur would except her idea or not, but she still didn't see any harm in asking. She was on her own quite a lot of the time and enjoyed the company of other cats. She stared down at her paws while she waited for Sootfur's answer. Despite knowing all her clan mates well, she usually felt nervous whenever she requested a hunting partner.

"Okay...." Sootfur tasted the air for prey and picked up the scent of a mouse. He saw it only a few tail-lengths away. He crept up on it and jumped killing it with a bite to the neck. He scraped some dirt over it and made a mental note to remember to come back and get it.

"Nice catch", Moongaze meowed. She soon detected a vole in the nearby shrubbery, and began creeping towards it. The bushes parted to reveal the prey. The Shadowclan warrior checked her position before pouncing; trapping the vole between her sharp front claws. Within an instant, it stopped struggling. The she-cat smiled, pleased with herself, before padded back over to Sootfur.

"Likewise." Sootfur winced at a sudden sharp pain in his stomach. He decided that he could probably hold out a little longer, but instantly changed his mind and it got worse. He tried to think what was causing it, but came up with nothing. "I'm going to go... back to camp..." he panted. He took a step and the pain caused him to have to sink down. "Or...I'll just stay right here...."

The black and white she-cat was at his side within a moment. "Sootfur?" Her voice sounded worried and slightly fearful. "What's wrong Sootfur? Are you alright? Do you need a medicine cat?" She thought desperately of the few healing herbs that she knew. "I'd give you poppy seeds, but I'm not sure if it interferes with anything else that you might be given...."
Suddenly a memory came back to Moongaze; from when she was an apprentice. On her expedition to Highstones, she’d been chosen to see her leader share tongues with Starclan in the cave of Mothermouth. It had inspired her to become a medicine cat, but she’d never voiced her wish. What if Sootfur was treated too late? Moongaze knew that she’d never be able to forgive herself if that happened…

Ebonyflame stepped out from behind a tree. Her muscles rippled as she walked. Her glare was cold as she looked at the two cats. She stetched her long shiny claws and then realized the panicstricken look of Moongaze and saw Sootfur in pain.
"Whats going on?" She hissed.
